This view of Capulin Volcano was taken near the entrance to the National Monument. The pinyon-juniper forest grows on volcanic flows in contrast to the better drained grasslands underlain by older
volcanic tephra deposits in the foreground. The park road that spirals around the
summit for two miles can be seen on the flank of the volcano in this image. A 0.2 mile hiking trail encircles the crater at the summit. |
