Big Bend National Park
Creosote bush and ocotillo grow on the rocky surface of a stream terrace along the Rio Grande. The river runs along the base the escarpment of the Sierra De Santa Elena in the distance. Rock formations of Lower Cretaceous age are exposed in the escarpment including, from bottom to top: Del Carmen Limestone (lower cliff), Sue Peaks Formation (vegetation covered slope), and Santa Elena Limestone (upper massive cliff). The older Glen Rose and Telephone Canyon formations that crop out along the river are not exposed in this image (Scheubel and Mruk, 1994).
