Devils Tower National Monument
This view is typical of the much of the first mile of the Grand Avenue Tour. Cleaveland Avenue is the name of this section of the Mammoth Cave where the ceiling is relatively low compared to the width of the cavern. The floor is dry cave earth, and travertine speleothems are generally absent. Locally crusts of gypsum cover the walls and ceiling, and parts of the cavern floor are covered with blocks that fell from the ceiling sometime in the past. The cave earth is a residual soil formed from the sediments washed into the cavern while the subterranean streams were still active in the passage long ago.
