Devils Tower National Monument
This image is of a sinkhole along the Turnhole Bend Trail. Sinkholes form where surface water drains downward into an underground river system. Sinkholes are abundant throughout the karst landscape that encompasses the Mammoth Cave region and much of central southern Kentucky. The even-bedded limestone around this sinkhole is typical of the Mississippian Girkin Formation (Palmer, 1981; Hayes, 1964).
