Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Location Map Two ducks (mallards) along the shore of the Colorado River near mile 56 (Cranes Neck Rapids) in Black Canyon. Despite being one of the potentially hottest locations in North America, the water in the Colorado River draining from Hoover Dam is cold and typically quite clear. The temperature of the water draining from the depths of Lake Mead are in the constant range of about 53 degree Fahrenheit throughout the year. Hoover Dam also limits the flood range to about 2 meters which fluctuates daily with electricity production by the dam's generators (see U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, 2010).
