Painted Hills Unit, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument
View of the Leaf Hill Trailhead in the Painted Hills Unit. The Painted Hills is one of many Oligocene fossil plant localities of the John Day Formation in central Oregon. The fossils recovered in the Painted Hills preserved a history of changing deciduous forests in fluvial lowland environments (Meyer and Manchester, 1997).
