Blue Basin Trail, Sheep Rock Unit, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument
Blue Basin is a badlands-style outcrop area where bluish-gray sediments of the lower John Day Formation are exposed. A well-maintained trail leads about one-half mile up a canyon to a large natural amphitheater-shaped basin. Along the trail the park personnel have installed many fossil and interpretive exhibits.
