Grand Canyon
Little Colorado River Gorge overlook east of Grand Canyon National Park along Arizona Highway 64. Shadow or Ghost Mountain, a Quaternary age volcano, is in the distance. Horizontally bedded layers of Permian sedimentary rocks are exposed in the gorge. Kaibab Limestone overlies the more massive Toroweap Formation and Coconino Sandstone exposed in the lower cliffs of the gorge ( Note: stratigraphy on this website is noted after Beus and Morales, 1991; Billingsley, 2000, and Timmons and others, 2009).
