Panamint Valley
The surface of North Panamint Playa consists of desiccated mud (a mix of clay, silt, and sand partially cemented by salt). In the distance, complexly folded and faulted sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age crop out on Panamint Butte (elevation 6,585) located northeast of the Playa. White rock and sediments of a recent debris flow stand out on an alluvial fan at the base of the butte.
