Colorado National Monument
This view is looking south from the Otto's Trail towards the flat-lying sedimentary rocks on the south side of the monocline. The red slope at the base of the cliffs is the Chinle Formation (Upper Triassic), the lower massive sandstone cliff is the Wingate Formation (Lower Jurassic), and the cliff-top layered sandstone and slope forming units of the Kayenta Formation (Lower Jurassic). Another red, massive sandstone above the Kayenta is the Entrada Sandstone (Middle Jurassic). The forested slopes on top of the escarpment consists of younger Jurassic-age sedimentary formations including the Wanakah Formation (Middle Jurassic) and Morrison Formation (Upper Jurassic) (Scott and others, 2001).
