Capitol Reef National Park
View of Grand Wash from the trail to the "tanks" (water-filled potholes). Cliffs are of massive, crossbedded Navajo Sandstone. The great white dome-shaped spires of Navajo Sandstone reminded early visitors to the park area of the building domes in Washington, D.C., and the term "reef" referred to any rocky barrier hindering travel; hence the source of the park name, Capitol Reef (NPS, 2006).
