Canyon de Chelley
White House Ruins in Canyon de Chelly. Canyon de Chelly "is considered one of the longest continuously occupied sites in North America"(NPS, [2010]). The canyon contains ruins of several hundred indian villages the Ancestral Puebloans built between A. D. 350 and 1300. Pueblo style construction methods began after about A.D. 700, with the large masonry cliff dwellings built after 1100 A.D. The Navajo Indians began utilizing the canyons in the early 1700s. The national monument was established in 1931 (NPS, 1982; NPS, [2010]).
